Students at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) could be roaming the halls of a new $14.5 million high school by late October.
Due to favourable weather over the winter and an efficient contractor, the school should be opening 11 months ahead of schedule, says Jeremy Hobbs, chief information and facilities officer for the Upper Canada District School Board.
The new VCI, being built immediately west of the current location, was originally to be completed by September, 2011. A few months ago, the board revised that deadline to February, 2011, but now the opening has been pushed ahead even further. Construction began on the project in May, 2009.
“I’m really pleased that we’ll be able to get kids into that school a lot earlier than planned,” said Hobbs. “We’ve had exceptionally good weather in the last year and that has definitely contributed to our success. We also have a great general contractor and architect who have ensured that things get done ahead of schedule, but get done well.”
Hobbs said demolition of the current VCI building will begin almost immediately after the move to the new school with the final touches on the site to be completed in spring 2011.
